FAQs

We are a good fit for families who:

  • Are currently unschooling/following a self-directed education model at home and would like their child to do so in community 1-2 days a week.

  • Wish to do a hybrid of curriculum-based homeschooling AND be in a self-directed education community 1-2 days/week.

We are NOT a good fit for families who:

  • Expect our co-op to provide a curriculum-based education for your child.

  • Expect our facilitators to tutor or help with “school work” or other curriculum you are following at home.

Attendance is not compulsory, but we do encourage regular attendance.

Being prompt and ready to participate in the morning meeting, offerings, and activities will help the day run smoothly and build community. Offerings are planned based on current enrollment so regular attendance helps us estimate group dynamics and material quantities. If you are not able to attend on your regular day(s), please let us know.

Community Collaboration

We are a mixed-age community. Activities throughout our learning environment happen through age mixing. This supports sharing knowledge and learning from each other. While some offerings are based on skill levels, the majority of the time is spent in a fully aged mixed environment.

  • Learners are free to choose whom they will play with or collaborate with.

  • We share resources and decision-making. Each member, regardless of age, has a voice in what happens in our program. We create community agreements together.

  • Together we strive to keep our community safe, clean, organized, and kid-friendly for all of our community members, their families, volunteers, visitors, and facilitators.

  • Effective collaboration is nurtured through adult modeling of compassionate communication, self-regulation, and emotional intelligence. We take opportunities, in developmentally appropriate ways, to support these skills in young people.

Agency

Learners are free to pursue their own interests, choose their daily activities, define their goals, and assess their progress with the support of caring facilitators. Daily offerings are optional.

  • Together, learners and facilitators hold the responsibility of educating themself and the community.

Facilitator Role: create a rich environment; offer engaging activities, projects, and lessons.; assist learners in identifying and navigating obstacles to their natural desire and propensity to learn.

  • Learner Role: develop self-direction and time management skills through choosing day to day activities.
